World map with the countries visited coloured green

The editor above already holds a map: the world, with the countries someone has visited filled in. Treat it as a starting point rather than a blank page. Click countries to change them, switch to another place from the list on the left, or open a template and work from that. Once you change the map it is saved in your browser, under Your maps, and you can come back to it later.

What you can make

A map for a report or a slide is the usual job: one country with a few regions picked out in your own colours and a legend that says what each colour means. A lesson needs something plainer, such as a continent with its country names showing, printed on A4. For a trip, pin the cities you are visiting and draw a route between them with a small plane along the line. And when the colours should follow numbers, paste a column of figures by country from a spreadsheet and the map colours each place by its value, with a key underneath.

Each of these has a maker page that opens on a map made for it, and the templates cover the most common ones.

The tools that matter

The place list on the left is where a map begins. Its Map of button switches to a continent, a group such as the EU or the G20, or a custom set of countries, and its search finds any country or its regions. Clicking a place on the map opens a small card with a row of colours and Show names.

Style in the toolbar changes the whole look at once: Classic for everyday use, Minimal for reports, Dark for a dark slide. More opens the deeper settings in tabs: Items for pins, text boxes and routes, Data for figures from a spreadsheet, and Canvas for the title, the size and the legend.

How to do it in MapMaker

  1. Choose the Map of button at the top of the place list, or New map… in the MapMaker menu to start from a template.
  2. Click the places you want and pick their colour on the card beside it, then click the sea to clear the selection before you colour the next group.
  3. Add pins, text or a route from Tools in the toolbar, and a title on the Canvas tab of More.
  4. Choose Download and save the map as a PNG, JPG, SVG or PDF.

Where to go next

To start from a design rather than a place, browse the 15 templates. Every country also has an editable map page of its own, and the country map generator opens straight on the country you search for.

Questions people ask

Can I start from a template?

Yes. Open the MapMaker menu at the top left of the editor and choose New map… to see all 15 templates, from a blank world to a vintage poster. Each one opens as a new map, so the one you were working on stays as it was.

Which places can I make a map of?

The world, any continent, any country and, for most countries, its regions. Groups such as the European Union or the G20 open with their members picked out, and a custom set lets you choose the countries yourself.

Is the map maker free to use?

It is, while MapMaker launches: you can make, change and download maps without paying or signing up. The Pro badge on some downloads only marks what may need a paid plan later.

Can I use the map in slides, documents or social posts?

Yes. Set the canvas to 16:9 for a slide or to a square or landscape social size first, then download a PNG or JPG. For Word or Google Docs, a PNG at the current size works well.

Your first map is a click away.
