World map with the countries visited coloured green

The map above starts with the world and a few countries already filled in green: click each country you have been to and it fills with colour, while the place list keeps count of how many you have selected. Click one by mistake and a second click clears it. Give the map a title with your name, and it is ready to save as an image or print for the wall.

Ways to use a travel map

Most people make one for themselves, to see how much of the world they have covered and where the gaps are. Couples and families make a shared one, sometimes with a second colour for the places only one of them has been to.

It also works as a plan. Colour the countries on a wish list in a different shade and the map shows where to go next. Travel writers put one at the top of an about page, and teachers use it with a class to show where pupils have family or have lived.

Filling in your countries

Clicking the map is the quickest way, but small countries are easier to find in the place list on the left. Type a name into its search and pick the country under On this map to fill it in. The list's Selected filter shows only your countries, grouped by continent with a count for each.

To change the green, open Colours in the toolbar and set the selected colour, or pick a colour on a country's card for that country alone. The legend already reads Visited; Legend labels on the Data tab lets you change the wording, and a title on the Canvas tab names the map.

How to do it in MapMaker

  1. Click each country you have visited, or find it with the search in the place list.
  2. Choose Selected in the place list to check your countries and the count.
  3. Add a title such as My travels on the Canvas tab of More.
  4. Choose Download and save a PNG to share or a PDF to print.

Where to go next

The countries I've visited template is the map above. To draw the journeys between them, use the route map generator, and for the world without anything filled in, start from the world map generator.

Questions people ask

How do I keep count of the countries I have visited?

Every country you click is selected, and the place list shows how many are selected at the top of each continent. Choose the Selected filter to see the list of your countries, and Unselected for the ones still to go.

Can I mark countries I want to visit in another colour?

Yes. Click a country and pick a second colour on its card, then rename that colour's line in the legend, for example to Next year, under Legend labels on the Data tab of More.

Can I share my map on social media?

Download it as a PNG and post it like any other picture. A square social size on the Canvas tab, set before you download, makes it fit a post without cropping.

Will my map still be there next time?

Yes, in the same browser. Once you change the map it is saved there under Your maps, so you can come back after the next trip and fill in another country. It is not stored online.
