Ideas for a map of Australian states and territories

With 11 administrative areas, the Australian map is quick to colour and easy to read from the back of a room. It opens in the editor with the states, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and the other areas drawn as separate shapes, so a slide can be finished in a few minutes.

A franchise, a depot or a state manager map

One colour per manager, one click per area and a legend with the names: that is a coverage slide. Add pins for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and the same slide shows where the offices are. A national retailer can use a second colour for the areas where a rollout is planned. The editable map of Australia opens the same areas for the country.

A road trip or a school project

Pin the cities on your route and join them with numbered stops; if the trip is a flight, switch the plane icon on. Students can colour each area as they study it and add a title for a classroom display. Because there are only 11 areas, a pupil can label the lot on screen in a lesson.

Setting it up

Colour on the page first, then choose Customise this map to open the editor, where the place list names every area, including Jervis Bay Territory, Lord Howe Island and Macquarie Island. Choosing them from the list is quicker than hunting for them on the map. The State lines switch turns the lines between areas on or off, and Neighbours adds Indonesia and Papua New Guinea in grey. Vintage gives a trip a poster look.

Slides and files

For a slide, use the 16:9 canvas and save a PNG with Transparent on if the deck has its own background; or use Copy image in the Download dialog and paste straight in. The map for PowerPoint page has more. SVG is the format for Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma, and PDF is for print on A4, Letter or A3.

How to do it in MapMaker

  1. Pick a colour in the bar on the map and click the areas for one manager or one stage, then repeat with the next colour.
  2. Switch on Neighbours if the slide should show Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
  3. Choose Customise this map, then Add your cities to pin Sydney, Melbourne or Perth.
  4. Add a title on the Canvas tab, then choose Download and pick PNG for slides or SVG for a design tool.

Questions people ask

How do I colour the Australian states and territories?

Pick a swatch in the bar on the map and click an area to fill it; click it again to clear it. In the editor, the place list names all 11 administrative areas, from the Australian Capital Territory to Western Australia.

Can I add Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to the map?

Yes, in the editor. Add your cities opens the pin tool with the city search; type Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide and each pin lands in place with a label you can edit.

Can I plan a route between Australian cities?

Yes. Pin the cities, then join them with the route tool. Numbered stops show the order, and a plane icon can be switched on for a flight, which suits a trip that crosses more than one state.

Can I show Indonesia and Papua New Guinea on the map?

Yes. The Neighbours switch in the bar on the map draws the surrounding countries in grey, so a slide can show Indonesia and Papua New Guinea around it. Switch it off for Australia alone.
